“Political Animals” is going for inspired-by-reality drama and “West Wing”-style political uplift. Elaine Barrish Hammond (three names, just like Hillary Rodham Clinton, get it?) is a former first lady with a fondness for pantsuits who has a philandering but politically popular husband. In a bid to make her own national political mark (she’s also a former governor, shades of Sarah Palin), she runs for president, loses the nomination fight, and accepts the consolation prize of Secretary of State. Oh, and Elaine (played by Sigourney Weaver) asks for a divorce from her husband, Bud (Ciaran Hinds), now a former president. Bud is dating actress Eva Flores (played by Lucila Sola) who is clearly modeled after Sofía Vergara on “Modern Family.”
A reporter named Susan Berg (played by Carla Gugino) blackmails Elaine into giving her an interview. (One thing Speakeasy likes about her subplot–Georgia Gibbons, the blogger in Susan’s office, is depicted as stylish, smart, and threatening to the status quo, to which we say, spot on good sirs). Susan has the goods on one of her kids–Thomas aka T.J., the troublemaking First Son who is also an out homosexual–and in exchange for not doing a story, the reporter, who earned a Pulitzer for writing about the ex-President’s affairs, gets an all-access pass to hang around her for an in-depth profile. political-animals-series-premiere-tv
